Disney's 'Magic Bench' Puts You in the Picture with Animated Figures

A new "Magic Bench" designed by Disney Research lets you interact with endearing animated characters — and no special glasses or headsets are required. Instead, the complete environment — the seat, the sitter and the cartoon humanoid animals — is mirrored on a screen opposite the bench, making it possible for others to watch the scene unfold.  How does the illusion work? A camera and sensor capture images and gather depth information about physical objects — the bench and the person — that algorithms integrate with the 3D animations, the researchers wrote in a study. Meanwhile, haptic sensors built into the bench deliver vibrations that are synchronized to animated actions on the screen, creating the illusion that the animated figures are occupying real-world space next to the user.   "Our mantra for this project was: hear a character coming, see them enter the space, and feel them sit next to you," Moshe Mahler, principal digital artist at Disney Resea

What Is Rectifier?

A  rectifier  is an electrical device composed of one or more diodes that converts alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). A diode is like a one-way valve that allows an electrical current to flow in only one direction. This process is called rectification. A rectifier can take the shape of several different physical forms such as solid-state diodes, vacuum tube diodes, mercury arc valves, silicon-controlled rectifiers and various other silicon-based semiconductor switches. Rectifiers are used in various devices, including: DC power supplies Radio signals or detectors A source of power instead of generating current High-voltage direct current power transmission systems Several household appliances use power rectifiers to create power, like notebooks or laptops, video game systems and televisions. What is a rectifier? When the voltage is applied to the P-N junction diode in such a way that the positive terminal of the battery is connected to the p-type

What Is An Amplifier?

An amplifier is an electronic device that increases the voltage, current, or power of a signal. Amplifiers are used in wireless communications and broadcasting, and in audio equipment of all kinds.  Or Amplifier is device which increase the strength of signal. An amplifier, electronic amplifier or (informally) amp is an electronic device that can increase the power of a signal. An amplifier functions by taking power from a power supply and controlling the output to match the input signal shape but with a larger amplitude. In this sense, an amplifier modulates the output of the power supply based upon the properties of the input signal. An amplifier is effectively the opposite of an attenuator: while an amplifier provides gain, an attenuator provides loss. Amplifier is made up of transistors. before invention of the transistor vacuum tubes were used in amplifier. Classification of Amplifiers 1-Type of Signal a. Small Signal i. voltage amplifier b. Large Sign

E. C. George Sudarshan In A Tryst With Physics

E.C.G. Sudarshan T he physicist Hans Bethe once said, “There are two types of genius. Ordinary geniuses do great things, but they leave you room to believe that you could do the same if only you worked hard enough. Then there are magicians, and you can have no idea how they do it.” In the world of science, every so often we come across visionaries, ‘magicians’ in the words of Bethe, who dare to perceive the world in ways no one else has before. E.C. George Sudarshan is one of them.  Born in Kottayam in 1931,   Ennackal Chandy George Sudarsan   studied at the CMS College and later at the Madras Christian College, the University of Madras and the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research. ECG (Ennackal Chandy George) Sudarsan had been nominated nine times for Nobel Prize in physics. Sudarsan rewrote Albert Einstein's theory through the discovery of Tachyon particles in quantum optics. Famous scientist Vaidyanath Misra was also with Sudarsan in his efforts that led t

What Is Artificial Intelligence ?

Since the invention of computers or machines, their capability to perform various tasks went on growing exponentially. Humans have developed the power of computer systems in terms of their diverse working domains, their increasing speed, and reducing size with respect to time. A branch of Computer Science named  Artificial Intelligence  pursues creating the computers or machines as intelligent as human beings. Definition  AI (artificial intelligence) is the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. These processes include learning (the acquisition of information and rules for using the information), reasoning (using the rules to reach approximate or definite conclusions) and self-correction. Particular applications of AI include expert systems, speech recognition and machine vision. Or we can say that Artificial intelligence is a branch of computer science that aims to create intelligent machines. It has become an essen

What Is Radio Frequency Engineering?

Radio frequency engineers  are specialists within the electrical  engineering  field. They work with devices that transmit or receive  radio waves , including wireless  equipment, radios, and cellular phones. A background in general electronics, physics, and math is needed to design and improve  wireless  networks. In a descriptive form Radio‐frequency (RF) engineering is about systems that operate at radio frequencies such as microwave frequencies. This chapter begins with a look at the RF subsystem of a typical radio. This gives us a good view of how amplifiers, filters, mixers, and so on, may be organized in a typical RF subsystem. The chapter then elaborates on the “handle with care” aspects of RF and how it differs from low‐frequency circuits. It introduces some mathematical preliminaries, such as how we model RF subsystems and how we perform analysis on nonlinear effects. The chapter then tackles the problem of noise. Besides noise, it considers another characteristic
